Wythenshawe Community Farm is a community farm based in Wythenshawe Park. This traditional working farm is home to a small number of farm animals including pigs, sheep, goats, cows and horses; it often has baby animals on site due to its extensive breeding programme.
We only visited for the first time during the Easter holidays – for some reason this farm had never really been on my radar but when I realise it was home to a herd of award-winning Hereford cows, well of course I had to take Amy to pay them a visit.
Here’s what you need to know about visiting Wythenshawe Community Farm:
1. Wythenshawe Community Farm is right in the middle of the park itself, located right next to the children’s play area – which means the play area definitely has a good whiff of farm about it!
2. The farm is open most days from around 11am. Although the farm is open all year round, the opening hours do change seasonally and may occasionally be closed for training or maintenance so it’s worth checking before you plan a visit: call 0161 946 0726 to check.
3. Wythenshawe Community Farm is a registered charity and is completely free to visit and no booking is required – once the gates are open you are free to wander in and meet the animals!
4. You can purchase animal feed from the farm shop at £1 a bag (as well as being a nice thing to do, this helps to support the costs of running the farm).
5. The farm’s walled garden grows fruit and vegetables which are available in the farm shop along with fresh meat and eggs.
6. There’s a couple of toilets with sinks – be sure to make sure you wash your hands before you leave the farm (especially if you’ve been stroking or feeding the animals).
7. Parking at Wythenshawe Park is free but limited
8. Dogs are not allowed in Wythenshawe Community Farm for obvious reasons!
9. If you’re hoping to see young animals on your visit, then spring is definitely the best time to visit. During our trip in the Easter holidays we were able to see piglets, calves and lambs.
