Siblings – February 2021

Scrolling back through the photos I’ve taken of our team of three over the last few weeks – they are basically all just variations on a theme which is hardly surprising considering all the three of them have really done for the last few week is sit at the dining table doing their home learning (with varying levels of commitment and success), go into school one day a week (whilst Dave and I are both at work) or head out for a walk. We have done SO much walking.

The weather has been mostly kind in that it has been fairly dry but the temperatures have been harsh at times and we’ve been grateful for base layers, walking boots and thick winter coats. Having the right clothes for our outdoor adventures definitely makes life a lot easier!

All three kids have done us proud with their efforts when we are out and about – we usually walk about 3 miles if we’re doing a reservoir loop or a bit longer if we are walking in woodlands or parks. This weekend we did 7 miles down through Daisy Nook and goodness knows where else – both Amy and I were absolutely shattered but Ben and Chloe managed to pull a sprint finish out of the bag and both of them ran up our street to get home! I have no idea where they get the energy from.

I was telling Chloe the other weekend just how proud my Grandad would have been of them. He loved a good walk and he’d have been so happy to see them out in nature, exploring and breathing in the fresh air. I wish he could see them.

I love listening to them chatting when they walk – they often hold hands (especially Ben and Amy) and have all sorts of funny conversations. This weekend Ben spent about 45 minutes giving a full David Attenborough style commentary of our walk which had us all in stitches. They spent a good chunk of the walk peeling reeds to make broomsticks, sliding down a steep icy path on their knees and playing all sorts of games.

They drive each other mad in the house but they rarely argue when we are out walking, which I suppose is why I’ve always been keen to get them out and about on adventures ever since they were tiny – they are just easier when we’re not at home!

I’m hoping that by the time I write my next siblings update, things will have changed a bit and that we might be back in school – or at least working towards it. Depending on how things pan out, if we don’t get a full return, Amy is currently likely to be within the first children invited back which I think we’d all be glad of! She certainly demands the most attention from Dave and I in terms of her home learning and provides the other two with plenty of distraction.

I’ve said it before I’m sure, but I’m so grateful that these three have had each other over the past year. Much as they argue about Minecraft, whose turn it is to choose what’s on TV or who is most responsible for the mess, they do love each other dearly and are the best company for each other than they could wish for.
