As life slowly returns to normal and the summer holidays have arrived, I’m keen to make sure that I get the kids out and about as much as possible – for my sanity as much as theirs. Under normal circumstances I’d have pretty much the whole summer holidays mapped out by now with festivals, camping trips, days out with friends and so forth but of course this year things are different and whilst we are tentatively planning, we are also aware that life isn’t really normal at the moment – that lots of the things we would normally choose to do in the school holidays just can’t happen this year and that the plans we do make might be subject to change should our local area be forced into a second Lockdown or if, indeed, any of us were to become unwell.
With all that in mind, and the fact we have a new puppy in our family, our summer plans will be even more outdoorsy than ever! I’m planning for dog walks, beach days, bike rides and riverside paddling – and as such I want to make sure we are well equipped for this.

Chloe and I have both had Keen walking boots for a while now – and they are by far the comfiest walking boots I’ve ever had. In the last 18 months I’ve worn them on soggy school runs, camping trips, dog walks and even to festivals (I have issues with one of my ankles and find that my hiking boots are the best thing for the uneven ground of a festival field!) so I knew that a pair of Keen sandals would be a great addition to their summer adventure kit!

Keen have several options for children’s sandals this summer but I eventually settled on the Newport H2 sandal for all three of them – the sturdy, supportive sandals are made for adventure – for long walks, tree climbing and even for paddling thanks to the quick-dry webbing!

The adjustable hook-and-loop strap makes it easy for kids to put their own shoes on (always a win I’m sure you’ll agree!) and there’s no faffy shoe laces to mess about with. All three of my children have quite narrow feet but we found that, thanks to the adjustable straps, and the the supportive enclosed shape of the sandals, we were able to get a good fit. All three children said they were really comfortable from the first wear and nobody complained about any rubbing on toes or heels.
The sturdy soles featuring a non-slip grip which is great for paddling and scrambling but the girls have also found their sandals are great for cycling – the shoes don’t slip about on the pedals and I’m confident that their sandals are “sensible”. I’m a big fan of the enclosed toes and substantial toe bumper to protect their feet when they are clambering, walking and running.
The style of the shoes keeps the children’s feet protected and supported whilst allowing fresh air to circulate and keep their feet cool. Of course the downside of this is that they will also let in little stones – something which Amy has next to no patience for!
