Brand new for 2024, the producers of Christmas at Dunham Massey have brought a new Halloween trail to Quarry Bank this October half term where they claim you will “experience spine-tingling mayhem with daring fire performers, ghostly horseman, phantoms, larger-than-life spiders and much more spooky fun”.

What do I need to know about Halloween at Quarry Bank trail?
Unless you are taking little ones to do the Halloween at Quarry Bank trail, I recommend that you book a slot for dusk or just after – we found that arriving at 5pm (in what was essentially still broad daylight) meant that we sort of lost the impact of the lighting and spooky sound effects – it did mean that we could really see the details in the installations but we all agreed that we wished we’d been joining the trail at 6pm when it was starting to get dark.
If you’ve been to Quarry Bank before, you’ll know there’s some quite steep slopes to navigate – the trail heads down the main path in front of the mill, across the river and then back inside the mill itself and up the hill again to the exit. Although the mill is accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs, I don’t know if I’d have bothered with the hassle of going in! It is quite eerie to walk through the mill in darkness – the machinery is lit and there’s some brilliant sound effects of children singing etc but I don’t think you’d really feel that you’d missed much. The loop is approximately 0.7 miles and took us about half an hour to do including lots of stopping for photos – I must admit I’d expected to be there longer. We were all quite surprised when we realised we’d actually finished the trail.
Although the trail didn’t feel as long as I might have liked, we were really impressed with the quality of the installations – the trail absolutely has not been cobbled together. The team behind Christmas at Dunham Massey know what they are doing when it comes to putting together a great trail and you can really see that level of “polish” compared to other seasonal trails we’ve done.
There’s food and drink available at the start of the Halloween at Quarry Bank trail and part way round. You can also buy fancy marshmallows for toasting (£2 each) however the fires weren’t properly lit when we arrived at that section of the trail and none of us felt like hanging around to waiting – especially as it was getting busy with other people waiting to toast marshmallows too.
Highlights for us on the Halloween at Quarry Bank trail were the headless horseman and the mill master who made sure that the girls knew that they were late for work! Live actors really do add a bit of something when it comes to this sort of event don’t they?
Although we’d have liked the trail to be a bit longer, and we’d definitely benefited from a later slot to get the full light and sound effects, we did enjoy the trail – it’s really well organised with plenty of attention to detail so if Halloween is your thing, I’m sure you’d enjoy it!

What do I do about parking?
There is onsite car parking available for Halloween at Quarry Bank and this should be pre-booked online when you buy your tickets – if you don’t pre-book your parking it is highly unlikely there won’t be a space available for you. Parking is charged at £7 per vehicle.
Free parking for National Trust Members is only offered with advance ticket purchases and must be pre-booked.
Do I need to pre-book for Halloween at Quarry Bank?
Entrance to Halloween at Quarry Bank is limited and in timed slots to avoid the event becoming over crowded so yes, you do need to pre-book your tickets.

Can I take my dog to Halloween at Quarry Bank?
No, no dogs are allowed on this Halloween trail (except of course for assistance dogs!)
Is the trail muddy?
You don’t need to worry too much about footwear as the trail is paved so shouldn’t get muddy (I was still glad I’d worn my walking boots). Do make sure you dress for the weather though!
Is Halloween Quarry Bank scary?
This isn’t a scare attraction – you don’t need to worry about jump scares etc. Aside from the Mill Master, we didn’t really think anything was particularly scary, more just spooky (and probably not even that if you visit during daylight hours!)
