Magical Woodland Halloween is a Halloween-themed woodland trail featuring spectacular light and sound installations, interactive displays, local street food vendors and live actors including Wednesday Addams and Batman (randomly). You’ll even find Transformers at Magical Woodland Halloween this year!
Now if you’re a regular reader, you’ll know I don’t especially love Halloween – bonfire night and Christmas is more my thing – but my kids probably suffer for my dislike of Halloween so this year I’m keen to try out some local Halloween experiences and prove to them I’m not a complete grump . . .
On Friday night I took Amy, Chloe and Chloe’s best friend to try out the Magical Woodland Halloween trail – it’s about a 50 minute drive from our house in Manchester.
We arrived on time for our 7pm slot and were quickly through the ticket checks and ready to enter the trail where we were greeted by our first live actor who gave us instructions explaining that we needed to stick to the path and to enjoy our evening.
There seemed be quite a few people arriving on the trail at the same time and we would occasionally get bunched up around photo opportunities or live actors but mostly we were able to spread out – I tended to just get the girls to hang back a bit and spend extra time looking at a different installation to allow groups to move on rather than us all be on top of each other. I imagine this might be more challenging on peak nights.
All three girls agreed that the trail is spooky and fun rather than scary (though we found the girl in the woods singing “If you go down to the woods today” pretty creepy!) and Chloe definitely jumped when a skeleton jumped out of a cauldron at her!)
My favourite parts of the trail involved what felt like millions of lasers dancing through the trees, the girls liked the two women on pirate ships arguing with each other or “having drama” as Chloe described it!
I don’t want to tell you about the trail in detail as I think that would spoil the surprises so instead I’m going to answer some questions you might have – and of course if there’s anything else you want to know, just leave me a comment and I’ll add it in!

What do I do about parking?
There is onsite car parking available for Magical Woodland Halloween and this can be pre-booked online when you buy your tickets. Parking is charged at £3 per vehicle.
Parking was quick and easy (though someone had been messing with the signs when we were trying to leave so we got briefly lost in the car park trying to find the exit!)
Do I need to pre-book for Magical Woodland Halloween?

Can I take my dog to Magical Woodland Halloween?
No, no dogs are allowed Magical Woodland Halloween (except of course for assistance dogs!)
How accessible is Magical Woodland Halloween?
The path is through woodland so, whilst the team have worked hard to make it as accessible as possible, the path is uneven in places, potentially muddy and not always flat. I saw a few parents struggling a bit with pushchairs.
How long is the Magical Woodland Halloween Trail?
The trail took us about an hour to complete including a stop to toast marshmallows. I did try to track the distance on my watch but it didn’t work – I would say it must be less than a mile though. You are welcome to walk around the trail multiple times but we didn’t feel the need to do that – after one lap we felt we needed a wee and a warm drink!
Is it scary?
There are definitely some bits that are a bit creepy – a Pennywise style clown statue, a creepy voice recording of a a little girl in the woods, some big spiders and flashes of lightening – but for the most part it’s more spooky (or even just really clever) and there were plenty of children much younger than mine who seemed to be enjoying themselves!
Is there food and drink available?
If you need to refuel and warm up, there’s a “street-style food and drink court” towards the end of the trail – there’s also the opportunity to toast marshmallows. Pricing seemed fairly standard – you’re looking at £5 for a mulled wine or a hot chocolate, £4 for a stick of marshmallows to toast (or three sticks for £10). We had eaten beforehand so I treated the girls to some marshmallows – these are on a 2ft stick of dowel which means even then youngest of children can safety toast their marshmallows (it does also mean that you can’t get away with taking your own marshmallows and skewers as you wouldn’t be able to reach the fire).
What about toilets?
There’s toilets at the start of the trail and part way round so you shouldn’t get caught short – if you’ve got little ones I’d do suggest making use of the toilets when you see them as once you’re on the trail, there’s no easy exit!

If you’re looking for a way to celebrate Halloween that doesn’t involve trick or treating or fancy dress (two things I really dislike!) then this might be the one for you!
